Smeared with ashes of palm fronds,
"You are dust and to dust you shall return" still ringing in our ears,
we dashed through the rain to our cars, our homes, our families,
our chores, our tv shows, our jobs, our lives,
almost forgetting that mark of death we bore into the world,
until we absentmindedly rubbed our forehead or walked past a mirror,
noting with surprise that even television and soap cannot separate us
from our own mortality.

ReplyDeleteI can assure you that I thought of the same thing as I dashed to my car in the rain. However, the words of the sermon stayed with me all night last night even as I said my prayers. Unlike others I didn't wash my ash off....even in the rain it stayed on
